Helpful Tips for Witnesses

As a victim or witness of a crime, your assistance is vital to our system of criminal justices. A Victims’ Advocate and Assistant District Attorney will be working with you and keeping you informed about the case while the defendant is prosecuted for the crime. If you are apprehensive about your court appearance, please call the Victim/Witness Center at  918-596-4915.

How Long Will it Take?
It varies. You may be excused after only a few minutes or you might be needed most of the day. Unfortunately, witnesses often have to wait. We suggest you bring something to read or keep you occupied while you wait. Often, there are several cases set for the same time. When children are involved, we request that these cases be heard first. When you are called may depend upon
• Whether or not all witnesses are in attendance
• The number of cases assigned to the judge in your case
• The availability of the defense attorney

Your Advocate will keep you advised of the case status. If your case is not heard before noon, you will be excused for lunch and asked to return to the VWC by 1:30 p.m. There is a snack bar located on the first floor of the courthouse and several restaurants located within a few blocks.

What if the Case is Continued?
Sometimes, for various reasons, a case will be continued or postponed. If we know in advance, we will make every effort to contact you and advise you that you need not appear. Sometimes, a continuance is sought on the day you appear. We are not always able to prevent such continuances.
